It Begins...

So to get things started out, here is what we're going to be doing. I'll go into some amount of detail about background stuff, because I have only really told the whole story to those who press me for details or ply me with drinks. I write long, and may or may not ramble, so probably you'll just have to get used to that. This is the broccoli post; it should get more fun once this is out of the way. We are going to Lira, Uganda to do ground-work setting up a microfinance organization. The organization is called MAPLE, which together with some friends, I started at the UO in like 2006. Our website is on the right; it has more info about what we're doing and about microfinance. Night Terrors

OK, time for a confession. When I was a kid, I used to watch Unsolved Mysteries, a true crime type show about real live criminals who had done heinous things and were out running around. I think the show especially focused on bad dudes who did bad things to good little kids. Clearly, I wasn't supposed to watch it, because it was not kid-friendly tv. And I didn't even really want to watch it, because it scared the hell out of me. But every time I flipped past it, I'd stop to watch a bit (and we only had maybe five channels, so it's not like I had a lot of other options). Anyway, I used to get so freaked out by this show. Just the music would probably give me cold sweats even today. Because I used to wake up in the middle of the night, hearing something. And living out in the country, there was always something. I always thought this might be true, but it's a tough statement to back up. (The Sisters, as seen from Mt. Bachelor) And yet, having had the good fortune of being able to travel a bit in my young life, I'm starting to get more and more confident in my suspicions. (The Woods, outside my Parents' Front Door) So I'm just gonna go right out there and say it. (Some certain Lake, in some certain Crater) If you wanted to make a list of the best places in the world, Oregon has to be near the top. Call me a homer if you want to, but it's true. (The Coast, south of Lincoln City) Luke, I'm not telling you to hurry back. Stay as long as you can, I'll take good care of your car while you're gone.
